Britain gave Israel plutonium, files show

Britain secretly supplied Israel with plutonium during the 1960s despite a warning from military intelligence that it could help the Israelis to develop a nuclear bomb, it was disclosed last night. The deal, made during Harold Wilson's Labour government, is revealed in classified documents released under the Freedom of Information Act and obtained by BBC2's Newsnight programme. (Guardian full story)

It was already known that Britain supplied heavy water to Israel, destined for its weapons-grade plutonium producing reactor in Dimona.

Turns out that British involvement in getting Israel the bomb went much further than that:
The documents also show how Britain made hundreds of shipments to Israel of material which could have helped in its nuclear weapons programme, including compounds of uranium, lithium, beryllium and tritium, as well as heavy water.

This is clearly an embarrassment to the British Government which is resolutely against Iran's plans for uranium enrichment as this is seen as a move by Tehran to acquire nuclear weapons, something which is flatly denied by the regime.

This smacks of more double standards in the West's attitude towards the Middle East. Iran is accused of secretly carrying on the development of its nuclear technology (with the help of that other famous tinfoil ally, Pakistan) in the past, whilst insisting that its nuclear program is for peaceful, civil purposes only and whilst remaining a signatory of the NPT.

Israel, in contrast, carried out its program in complete secrecy (until the cover of the alleged textile factory was blown by Mordecai Vanunu - photo) and without breaking any agreements... simply because it never signed anything! Today, Israel is estimated to have the sixth largest nuclear arsenal in the world, with an estimated 200, undeclared, nuclear warheads.

No doubt the Foreign Secretary will come out with something along the lines of "regrettable but past episode" but I doubt of the Iranians will see it that way...

You mean like when we treat the ones blowing our shit up differently than we do the Jews who are not?

I think if the Jews where attacking us we would be targeting Dimona just like we are Bushehr.

Trouble is the NPT doesn't say anything about denying Nuclear fuel cycle to nations that export Terrorism. It dont distinguish between rational and irrational cultures. Because it is a flawed cold war document that has never stopped proliferation, it has just become a blueprint for nuclear wannabes to follow if they want their their programs to reach critical mass before anyone can stop them.

I suppose Israel serves as the Final Option or check in the region. Quite far-sighted, those who helped to create and justify Israel with the most opportune debris of w.Europe's concentration camps. I suppose they owe St. Adolph a big one.

RT,

The best ad for Nukeeler weapons is the advantages the western powers have enjoyed at the expense of 'others' since they showed the world what awaits them - via Hiroshima & Nagasaki - if they ever contemplated doin unto Ye Ha-mericans that which they've been doin unto the rest of the inhabitants of the planet.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with taking out a few thousands, or even, a few hundred thousand 'innersen' good ole boys from yipee kai-A in order to get what you want. I mean, that is the clear message you rustlers sent humanity when you took out a few hundred thousand civilians to stop the Japs from doing unto you what you have been doing unto those damn 'niggers', 'injuns' and etcs for quite some time right. Just usin your standards boy, so just you get them spurs out of your arse you hear!

'Terrorism'? All i see is them yankees getting a good hiding IN RETURN.

So go and have a good think about that while you're chewin yer tobakky eh pardner.

(apologies Gert. Just couldn't help myself.)

gert, in case you haven't see it yet, I've just 'borrowed' this very recent exchange at mark's place. I'm sure he won't mind.

** Mark, I don’t suppose you know if the US 5th Fleet is still in the Gulf, do you?

Comment by Griffon — March 12, 2006 @ 9:39 am

Yes they’re still there and in fact were reinforced by strike force Reagan late last month:

The Ronald Reagan Strike Group is comprised of:

Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14.
Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7.
(That’s 7 squadrons of aircraft and a helicopter ASW unit if I’ve counted correctly.)
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Reagan
The guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57),
The guided-missile destroyers USS McCampbell (DDG 85) and USS Decatur (DDG 73)
The fast-combat support ship USS Rainer (T-AOE 7)
And an Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit 11.

At least one of those squadrons the F/A-18E Super Hornets who are assigned to the “Eagles” of Strike Fighter Attack Squadron (VFA) 115 have been conducting bombing missions in Iraq since the last week in Februaury.

All of that’s on top of the helicopter gunships now being deployed to Iraq of course.

Richard:

I saw that too. As you know I remain in two minds regarding whether the US will attack Iran (in whatever shape this attack would take), but it remains a very real possibility.

Do they always name these Strike Groups after dead Republican presidents? (lol)

I know what you mean about being in two minds, Gert.

One of mine tells me, no they couldn't be that crazy. Then the other one tells me, they're just plain crazy enough enough to do it.

Needless to say, the result is I'm left with a permanently spinning head. :*/

"It dont distinguish between rational and irrational cultures."

Who decides what is a rational or irrational culture ? Cheney? Karl Rove? Wolfowitz ? The Trilateral Commission ? The Council on Foreign Relations ? The American Enterprise Institute ?
